Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer morning in Bend, nothing could be worse than registering your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it is meant to. The last thing you should have to do is request cooling system repair. But your AC is an incredibly complex system, so it can be challenging to discover what’s creating the trouble all alone.

That’s why Tri County Climate Control LLC wrote this guide to help you understand what may be taking place with your air conditioner. From here, you’ll see a few everyday situtations that explain why your place is feeling uncomfortable. And even though a couple of these are fairly painless DIY projects, you might need to call in an expert for AC repair.

And if you do, Tri County Climate Control LLC is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Bend.

1. Your System Settings Could Be Off

Everyone uses their thermostat a bit differently to match their individual requirements. However, a lot of homeowners make the error of setting their thermostat to “On” instead of “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your system will continue to push out air even after you’ve gotten to your desired temperature.

This can come off like your AC is blowing out warmish air, when in reality it’s just using the fan more often than needed. Trying changing this setting and work out if things are different.

2. Your System Needs Some Cleaning

There are two principal areas to look for dirt or dust accrual when your AC doesn’t seem to be working right.

Firstly, inspect your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch your filter routinely, built-up dust can make it hard for air to travel through and cool your house. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time to replace it. (And in general, you should switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter appears clean, move to your external unit. Make sure there’s a couple of feet of space around it and sweep away plants or dirt close by. This part of your system lets out the heat from within your home. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be feeling cool inside.

We recommend setting professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your unit working like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that cools down the air in your home. It moves between your internal and outdoor units to absorb and release heat, to help your space get the right temperature. If there is an opening along that path, you won’t be feeling cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a drop in chilled air, pricier energy expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises coming from your air conditioner.

If you are worried refrigerant may be leaking, call Tri County Climate Control LLC for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be detrimental to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Need to Be Replaced

Your AC includes a a handful of key elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is not working, your home comfort declines.

Our Tri County Climate Control LLC pros are certified and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you diagnose and fix any issue.

5. Your AC Should Be Upgraded

If your AC is over 10 years old, it could be a good time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system puts on the years, it unfortunately won’t run as well as it did when it was new. And it could be making your house feel unpleasant.

If your HVAC unit is newer but still isn’t cutting it, it might be too small for your home. AC units are not all the same. An air conditioner that’s not powerful enough simply can’t help a space the way a properly sized system can.
